Onam Festival which is also known as vamana jayanthi, is a Hindu festival and the state festival of Kerala celebrated by the people of Kerala, India. The festival commemorates the Vamana avatar of Vishnu and the subsequent homecoming of the legendary Emperor Mahabali.

Carnival of Onam lasts for ten days and brings out the best of Kerala culture and tradition. Intricately decorated Pookalam, ambrosial Onasadya, breathtaking Snake Boat Race and exotic Kaikottikali dance are some of the most remarkable features of Onam - the harvest festival in Kerala.

The peoples of Kerala draw Onam Pookalam (also known as Athapookalam or Onapookkalam) in front of the house. Onam Pookalam is an intricate and colourful arrangement of flowers laid on the floor to welcome King Mahabali, the Asura king of ancient Kerala whose rule is said to be the golden era of Kerala.
